The Problem.

Our client recently launched a new employee portal transitioning from SharePoint to the Salesforce platform. I was brought in to join the agile product team as the UX Researcher & Designer to improve the existing site and help launch new features. This is an ongoing project that so far has included user research through surveys and interviews, and rapid prototyping and user testing. If you're interested in seeing the prototypes, or reading the full research reports feel free to reach out.

The Process

The first step in the process was to conduct user interviews so we could identify how users were using the portal and identify any pain points or areas for improvement. We began by creating a volunteer participant pool that we could draw from for user interviews, surveys and usability testing. We found participants through posts to the company wide Yammer feed, and a spotlight CTA on the portal's homepage.

With the participant pool set up, were able to conduct 9 user interviews with employees from across the organization. From our interviews we created an affinity diagram and were able to identify 5 major themes:

• Low Feature Awareness

• Users Aren't Scroll the Homepage

• Users Find Minimal Value in the Featured News Component

• The Portal is a Launching Pad for Other Systems

• It is Difficult to Find Content (IA Issues).

The Solution

Based on the existing product roadmap and development team capacity, the first gap were able to address was the issue of low feature awareness by creating a "What's New" feature utilizing components from the Salesforce Lighting Design System, that informs users of newly released features.

The Result.

With the release of the What's New feature, we have seen an increase in reported user awareness of newly released features. Also, as a result of the research we have also been able to add the information architecture update and creating new page templates to the product roadmap so we can address the issues users are having finding the content they need.

This project is ongoing and I'd love to talk to you about all the exciting things we have already shipped and are currently working on so be sure to check back for updates.
